Incredible
India !
India is a vast country with the Himalayas forming its northern boundary.
Only a relatively small
number of trekkers visit the Indian territory each year however the mountain
scenery and walking trails are as impressive as any in the high mountains of
Nepal. The whole of the Himalayas is seen as the abode of Lord Shiva and it very
likely that you will share your trek with pilgrims as many thousands visit the
holy Hindu temples and shrines every year. The Destination Kathmandu organizes
treks and expeditions to three regions of the Indian Himalayas: Sikkim &
Darjeeling, Ladakh and Uttaranchal (Kumaon & Garhwal).
In the east of India the
former Kingdom of Sikkim shares a mountainous border with Nepal in the west and
with China in the north and east. All of the early British expeditions to Mount
Everest in 1920s passed through Sikkim on the way to Tibet. This state of India
is famous for its large variety of flora especially its orchids of which they
are over 600 species. The monsoon normally moves from east to west across the
Himalaya so arrives to Sikkim early resulting in the lush sub tropical forests
at lower elevations.
Ladakh, also known as little
Tibet, is one of the most remarkable regions of India. Although politically part
of India, Ladakh is geographically and culturally an extension of western Tibet.
Ladakh is a high and arid landscape with lush irrigated valleys surrounded by
snow capped peaks. Leh the capital of Ladakh has long been a remote and
fascinating outpost and important cross-roads for pilgrims and traders in the
upper Indus Valley. After the spectacular flight over the Himalaya to Leh we
spend several days for essential acclimatization with sightseeing at Buddhist
monasteries.
Uttaranchal comprises both Kumaon & Garhwal regions with two popular treks one to Milam Glacier and the other is The Curzon Trail crossing Kuari Pass with spectacular views of Nanda Devi, Kamet and Changabang. You also visit Rishikesh on the River Ganges where you can spend time exploring the ashrams and temples.
